How Digital Camcorders Work

How Digital Camcorders Work
 by: Richard Gazzo

The first camcorder was invented by Jerome Lemelson in 1980. And since that time the first bulky analog video camcorders have evolved into the modern digital camcorder, so small they can fit in the palm of your hand, and so clear they rival even professional broadcast video cameras.

Consumers have been using camcorders since early 1980s. Since then they have gotten better and cheaper, with prices starting at only a few hundred dollars, making DV camcorders affordable for anyone. Shooting home videos is fun, everyone loves filming their families during special events. From your kids birthday, your son’s soccer game, to the family trip to Mexico, but how exactly do video cameras work?

Digital video cameras convert analog video into a digital format. Digital video camcorders take the analog information in the video camera and then translate it into bytes of data. Digital video is converted from moving images to a stream of zeroes and ones. The digital video camcorder records the bytes of digital information onto one of three items, a hard disk, a dv tape, or a DVD. From there you have the ability to transfer the video to your computer. You can then edit the video, email it to friends and family or even add the video to a website.

Portable DVD Players - Things To Know

May 21, 2008

In my humble opinion nothing makes a long trip easier (especially if you have kids). A portable DVD player is the ideal solution for those long plane rides or endless drives in a car to keep everyone entertained, especially when you have new hit DVD to play.

So what are some of things to keep in mind when selecting a Portable DVD Player?

(Here are some items to consider in no particular order.)

Screen Size:

Depending on where and when you plan on using your DVD player the most, size may really be a big factor in your decision. If you have a family that’s going to be watching movies in the minivan, you can bet you want to find a portable DVD unit with a larger screen so everyone gets a chance to view the movie. On the other hand, if you travel mostly by yourself or with a significant other, smaller may be the perfect thing for you, easy to haul and manage anywhere.

Mobile Phone Batteries. What Are Your Options?
 by: Will Koh

There are a range of different mobile phone, video camera/camcorder and digital camera batteries out there with varying capacities and battery chemistry. We will explain what the differences are for each battery chemistry and try to clear up the jargon used on the labels of mobile phone batteries. There have been several developments in battery technology and below, we will outline each battery chemistry’s features, pros and cons and their applications to mobile phones today.

“Memory Effect” in Batteries

Memory affect refers to the need for certain batteries to be “serviced” by regularly discharging the battery completely before recharging. Ni-Cad batteries are the main type of battery chemistry that requires this cycling and newer types of batteries such as Li-Ion and NiMH do not suffer from memory affect.

Battery Capacity Ratings

A battery capacity rating refers to the load or current that can be placed on a specific battery type. The battery capacity rating is usually measured in milliampres (mAH)

I would like to tell you about a magic home. You or your children have bought a home and fixed it up very nicely. The parquet floors shine brightly, beautiful crystal chandeliers create a special atmosphere inside while fancy landscaping, decorative fountains and waterfalls create an atmosphere outside. Garage door opens to let you out to work in the morning. There is nobody home. Everybody is gone for the day. The house is empty. But you forgot to turn off the light or close the garage door. Turning around and coming back home is not an option…

Self Defense Products Review

Self Defense Products Review
 by: Rick Burton

You decided you need some kind of self defense device to protect yourself from possible crime situation. But with so many defense gadgets on the market it’s not an easy choice. Read on to find out the difference between self defense products, how they work and which one meets your needs most.

Lets take a look at four main categories of defense items: pepper sprays, stun guns, personal alarms and firearms.

Pepper sprays. The active ingredient in pepper sprays is oleoresin capsicum, commonly referred to as OC. OC is a natural, oily, resin-like substance derived from hot peppers, the same peppers used to “heat up” spicy foods. Pepper sprays induce an almost immediate burning sensation of the skin and a burning, tearing, and swelling of the eyes. If spray is inhaled, the respiratory tract becomes inflamed resulting in a swelling of the mucous membranes lining the breathing passages and temporarily restricting breathing to short, shallow breaths.

Tips For Finding Great Deals On Computer Accessories & Supplies

May 17, 2008

Tip #1. Do a Google search. Don’t be to general in your search, type in exactly what your looking for. Try putting the words you type in quotes to narrow the search.

Tip #2. Go shopping at the office supplies and discount clubs. You may find some discount clubs like Costco & Sams have a 6 month return policy, check your location. California stores have a 6 month no questions asked policy, and yes, this means Computers and Software too, even if the package is open and you have used it. Just make sure you can put it back in the box and you have the receipt.

Tip #3. Don’t forget to check eBay.

Tip #4. Try other stores like Fry’s, Best Buy, Circuit City, Dell, Gateway, CompUSA.

Tip #5. If your looking for used try craigslist.org, eBay.com, http://auctions.yahoo.com

Tip #6. Compare prices at pricescan.com, pricewatch.com, pricegrabber.com, price.com, epinions.com, shopper.cnet.com, streetprices.com & bizrate.com

Tip #7. Check the Sunday newspaper.

Tip #8. Staples, Office Max and Office Depot have price matching. So If one of them has a sales you can take the sale ad to any one of them and they will honor it. Helpful if the store having the sale is not to close to you.

Satellite Phones vs. Cell Phones (Which One is Right for You?)

Satellite Phones vs. Cell Phones (Which One is Right for You?)
 by: Rex Strong

There are several factors that differentiate satellite phones from cell phones. How they work, their utility and cost just to name a few.

Functionality Differences

Cellular phones or cell phones use small stations or towers known as ‘cells’ from which they receive their signals and to which they send signals. As the user moves from one destination to the next, his call or his cellular service is passed on from cell to the next. The mobile handset is thus in continuous connectivity with the different cells of the network provider and the individual can talk on the move. This is thus known as mobile connectivity.

Satellite phones on the other hand, do not use ‘cells’ or towers. They work with satellites orbiting the Earth. These Low Earth Orbiting or LEO satellites receive signals from the satellite phone handsets and send signals to these handsets as required. The satellite phones send signals to the satellite, which passes it on to a gateway. The gateway routes the calls to the receiver. Also, all calls made to the satellite phones are routed via the satellites.

Font Organizers Review, Part I

May 15, 2008

Do you know how many fonts are currently installed on your PC? What is the difference between OpenType, TrueType, PostScript Type 1 and Printer fonts? If the answer is ‘No’, it’s time to consider getting a font organizer.

Typograf

This extremely well-done 32-bit app lets you preview, print, and manage TrueType and Type 1 fonts. You can use it to view font samples, whether the fonts are installed or not; sort font previews by filename, directory, font name, size, date, kerning pairs, copyright, and more; display a font’s properties, including general, metric, and kerning information; and check out a typeface to see what (if any) extended characters it has.

You can also use Typograf to compare fonts, print several types of sample pages, organize fonts into a database, and place fonts into groups that can be instantly activated and deactivated. If you’re a real font fanatic, you’ll appreciate the excellent typeface tutorial in the Help file, complete with a typeface history. Other features include the ability to search for duplicates; shortcuts to Control Panel, Adobe Type Manager (if installed), and the Registry Editor; and the ability to see the keyboard layout of each font.
