Home Electronics: The Facts About Plasma TV

September 29, 2007

Not so many years ago, homes across the country watched their favorite TV shows on a bulky floor model that took awhile to warm up before you could see the picture, didn’t offer anything in the way of remote control manipulation and offered a washed out image on the TV’s cathode ray tube hosted screen…and folks were thrilled to have such marvelous technology in their midst. Today, all of that’s been changed, with the introduction of plasma TV.

Instead of trekking to the local theater to catch a favorite flick, those who own a plasma TV can get pretty much the same experience in their own homes. If the thought of shelling out the amount of money that one of these sets costs makes you flinch, think of how much you’d be spending to buy movie tickets, and your perspective will change. If you multiply the number of movies that you’ll watch on your plasma set by $8.00 (the average price of a movie ticket these days), you’ll see that the set will quickly pay for itself. Even if your purchase price was $4300 for a 50" widescreen model, you’d see a profit after just about 538 movies were viewed ? watching two movies per day, then, would have you realizing a profit after about 9 months. When you factor in the cost of popcorn and a drink, you’ll be seeing a profit a lot quicker than that.

Odyssey Batteries and the Odyssey Optimizer

Odyssey Batteries and the Odyssey Optimizer
 by: Michael Hardgrove

Odyssey batteries are high performance batteries for anyone interested in any type of high speed motorized sporting. One brand has surpassed the rest in offering high performance batteries, and that is Odyssey.

Odyssey, which claims to be the Extreme Battery, offers batteries for motorcycles, ATVs, utility vehicles, and personal watercraft such as jet skis. Odyssey batteries are military grade and can withstand the abuse that comes from high speed motorized sports. While most batteries will succumb to vibration and mechanical abuse, Odyssey batteries do not.

Odyssey batteries are the original rechargeable battery containing lead acid. However, these batteries are sealed so they avoid spilling which is a hazard in traditional “spillable” lead-acid batteries. They are also referred to as sealed-MF, or maintenance free, because they are shipped fully charged and do not require activation.

Odyssey has developed its own tester and charger to ensure the proper maintenance of their batteries. Known as the Odyssey Optimizer, this charger and tester is one of the best of the market for sealed lead-acid batteries. The type of charger required depends greatly on how the motorized sporting equipment is used. If the battery must be discharged rapidly and then recharged rapidly, this requires a different charger than if the battery must stay at a high state of charge with multiple starts and stops.

Up until the recent past, those who wanted to take advantage of a mobile phone, data organizer, wireless e-mail with text messaging, web browsing and a digital camera had to have separate units for each. Batteries - From Laptops to Motorcycles

Batteries - From Laptops to Motorcycles
 by: Eric Comforth

What would you do without them? Seriously, if every single battery of every single type were suddenly zapped out of every single thing that it operated, what would any of us do?

Laptop computers, without a doubt, are the lifeblood of many a businessperson today. Portable, convenient, they allow us to work on the run and do more business. Laptop batteries are essential to keep this resource working, as it should.

The precursor to the laptop as we know it today was introduced by IBM back in 1986 and was called “The PC Convertible”. It weighed five and a half kilograms and cost around $3500.00.

As laptop computers have evolved, so too have laptop batteries.

• The first type of battery used in laptops was Nickel- Cadmium (NiCad). These can still be found in some older laptops. Their lifespan between recharges is about two hours, however, this decreases with each recharge. Also, if a NiCad laptop battery is charged for too long it may explode.

• The next type of laptop battery used was Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH). These laptop batteries last longer than NiCad batteries but their total lifespan is shorter.

What Phone System Does My Meridian Telephone Work On?

What Phone System Does My Meridian Telephone Work On?
 by: Bob Mrozinski

Nortel Networks, Northern Telecom and Meridian are terms that many end users have said to me when describing what phone system they have. It’s easy to get confused here, but we can sort some of this out.

Northern Telecom became Nortel some years ago. More recently, they have taken the name of Nortel Networks. This company has been and remains one of the largest phone system manufacturers in the world. They have made everything from the Central Office phone switches that provide phone lines, Centrex, T-1’s, and PRI’s to Norstar and Meridian phone systems for business offices to single line phones for residential use.

Finding the model number for your phone is one of the first things you need to do in order expand your system or replace bad phones. If you order the wrong phone model, it won’t have the same features and may not work at all on your phone system.

Taking Advantage of the iPod Experience

September 25, 2007

Music lovers have been carrying around radios and other bulky music devices in order to take their tunes along with them as they go from place to place. With the iPod ? a portable unit that’s manufactured by Apple ? the music experience offers a higher quality in a much more compact size.

The iPod will allow your personal music selection to be played for up to 12 hours at a time, and offers the additional perks of games and the ability to store files. Up to 5,000 songs can be stored within a standard iPod, providing instant access from wherever you happen to be at the moment. Whether you’re in the office, going for a stroll, in the car or around the house, iPod is the solution for your contemporary music needs.

Among the features of the iPod are the ability to choose a specific play list, shuffle through songs and much more ? all with the click of a button. Users even have the option of importing their favorite songs from CDs, and music can be transferred in a variety of formats, such as MP3 or AAC. What are the Projection Television Technologies Available?

What are the Projection Television Technologies Available?
 by: Bill Ransom

There are four types of rear-projection TV’s available currently. These are the older CRT rear-projection, DLP rear-projection, LCD rear-projection and LCoS rear-projection. Most available today are HD ready and can display digital signals.

CRT Rear-projection : these are the projection TV’s that have been on the market for years. CRT or Cathode Ray Tube technology is the same technology that your old TV set’s used. There are three tubes in these projection TV’s each for a primary color and they project the light onto the TV’s screen. Since they require three CRT tubes these TV’s are very big and deep. Most CRT projection TV’s come in 50 inches or larger screen size. CRT rear-projection TV’s are becoming extint and many companies do not make them anymore. They need to be adjusted frequently to keep the colors in line and the image quality and viewing angles are not as good as the next three rear-projection technologies.

Bluetooth Technology: Tips for Buying Headsets or Headphones

September 23, 2007

The technological horizon has always got something new to offer, and among the most recent of these offerings is Bluetooth enhanced hardware. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this latest-and-greatest technology, headsets and headphones in the Bluetooth line offer the ability to use your cell phone without the need for hands or dangling wires. In other words, when you have one of these, you’ve got yourself a wireless piece of hardware that attaches to the ear which allows cell phone communications to take place without the inconvenience or hassle of holding the phone to your ear or trailing long wires from the headset to the body of the phone.

If you’re toying with the idea of purchasing a Bluetooth headset or set of headphones, you’ll need to understand that ? as a result of the nature of this type of technology ? they aren’t as small or light as a headset that isn’t wireless. This is simply because it needs extended technology in order to function, as well as a battery to be used as its power source. What this means is that many of these sets are rather bulky and can be a bit uncomfortable. If that’s not something that you’re willing to accept, then perhaps Bluetooth isn’t the product for you.

The Eropean Satellite Navigation System “Galileo”

The Eropean Satellite Navigation System “Galileo”
 by: Erich Strasser

The Galileo positioning system is a proposed satellite navigation system, to be built by the European Union (EU) as an alternative to the US military-controlled Global Positioning System and the Russian GLONASS. The system should be operational by 2010, two years later than originally anticipated. The Galileo positioning system is not abbreviated to GPS; use of the acronym “GPS”, here and elsewhere, refers to the existing United States system.

The Galileo System will comprise global, regional and local components. The global component is the core of the system, comprising the satellites and the required ground segment

The regional component of Galileo may comprise a number of External Region Integrity Systems (ERIS), implemented and operated by organisations, countries or groups of countries outside Europe to obtain integrity services independent of the Galileo System, in order, for example, to satisfy legal constraints relating to system guarantees. Local components may be deployed for enhancing the performance of Galileo locally. These will enable higher performance such as the delivery of navigation signal in areas where the satellite signals cannot be received. Value-added service providers will deploy local components.
