Selecting a Personal Digital Assistant
June 22, 2007
A Computer in Your Hand
Carrying around an address book and planner is becoming a thing of the past. With new PDA developments, you can manage your contacts and schedule, use e-mail, and even listen to music. Personal Digital Assistants, originally called “Palm Pilots,” previously were used just for retrieving basic information. Today, using some of the more advanced models could possibly replace the need to carry a laptop computer. Modern PDAs can play music, games, videos, write documents, and connect to networks and databases — nothing short of a desktop computer.
Although newer PDAs have the processing power of a computer, they still have some limitations. Inputting information is done by handwriting recognition or by a miniature keyboard. Skilled users can input 20 - 30 words per minute, less than half the speed of a good typist on a full-size keyboard. PDAs with a color screen tend to run through battery life faster. Finally, because the small screen size the number of prograqm options that can be displayed, the programs available aren’t as advanced because the user doesn’t have as much control over the program.

Satellite reception is available only for individual homes. This is another myth as reception if signaling is excellent in apartment complexes as long as the dish is installed facing a southern sky. Dont Let the Internet Overstimulate Your Mind
June 16, 2007
The Internet is an awesome tool, but be careful and aware that the cloud of over stimulation doesn’t invade your mind.
It seems we have to become aware of a new problem that is starting to invade our modern, industrial society, that being the problem of over stimulation. The Internet is an excellent tool but we have to remember that the mind is the most valuable tool imaginable. Some would argue that spirit or soul is of equal or more importance, I am not disagreeing with these people. The point that I am attempting to put forward for discussion is that although the Internet is an excellent new medium that can affect nearly all aspects of life in a positive way, like all things in existence it too has a shadow side. Over stimulation of the mind is a huge cloud in the blue sky of consciousness.
Have you ever sat at your desk searching through the Web for News information, then checking your emails with their accompanying attachments and links, and then doing general searches for random information? If you receive newsletters, or subscribe to blogs, you read these daily as well. The human mind is powerful, and scientists say that we only use an average of 10 % of it, but doesn’t that entail that we should be careful not to overload its present information processing capabilities?

Is Desktop Search Deserving?
June 14, 2007
Google, in their march to stay ahead of the pack of competition, has released Google Desktop Search. With Microsoft’s MSN in the lead position and nipping at Google’s heels, and Google’s new shareholders to please, Google has more incentive than ever to deploy technology both better than the other guy’s, and sooner. After all, the first to get loaded to the desktop is more likely to build and retain user loyalty.
Google Desktop Search allows you to search within various types of files on your computer. It’s still in beta, but is available for download by anyone. It requires Windows XP or Windows 2000 with at least Service Pack 3. It runs as a memory-resident application, with a system tray icon, so that it can index new documents as they are created.
For example, if you know a certain word or phrase was in a Word document, but you don’t remember which one, you can easily locate all documents on your computer that contain that word. Desktop Search can search through email, text, and HTML files, your cached web pages, and MS Office Documents (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint only).
